Heroes (2:58)

Dedicated to Mary Cookson (my mum!)

Churchill was a hero he saved us in the war
Worked every waking hour, ha! You couldn't ask for more
He led "our green and pleasant land" to fight and to survive
We lost him to his god in sixty-five

In sixty-nine Neil Armstrong walked upon the moon
Just one small step on lunar soil, he new he'd be home soon
But nothing had prepared him as he saw the earth so small
He enjoyed the trip but mother earth had called

In ninety three Mandela received the Nobel Prize
For peace he was a hero, so we're all glad he survived
He could have hated white men for apartheid in his youth
Instead he reconciled them to the truth

There are lots of unsung heroes as we all can testify
They're looking after old folk or the children when they cry
And we take them all for granted like our passageway in time
I wish those unsung heroes peace of mind

My mother was called Mary, the mother to my clan
I know you didn't know her so it's hard to understand
But to me she was a hero she saved me several times
The most important hero of my time

But there are lots of unsung heroes as we all can testify
They're looking after old folk or the children when they cry
And we take them all for granted like our passageway in time
I wish those unsung heroes peace of mind
The most important heroes of our time
And to those local heroes - please be kind!
